Leek welcomed Sutton Coldfield in the grand opening of their new 3G pitch in one of football’s most prestigious competitions of the FA Cup. Leek started the game brightly on were on the front foot, with an early effort from Katie Maya well saved by the opposition’s keeper. Moments later Leek did get the opener, with a brilliant volley from Alana Copeland from 25 yards out found the bottom corner of the goal. Leek almost doubled their lead again from Alana Copeland who’s headed attempt was cleared off the line by Sutton’s defender. With 20 minutes on the clock Leek did double their lead as Rehanne Mellor latched onto a through ball on the right-hand side and finished with a low shot across the keeper to find the bottom left corner of the goal. 2 minutes later it was almost 3-0 as Katie Maya skipped past two defenders on the left-hand side but saw her curling effort just go wide of the far post. Sutton half the deficit with a quick counter as Leek lost the ball just in the opposition half with their forward firing past Leek Keeper Beth Cottrell. The second half started the same as the first with Leek dominating the play and added to their lead with 53 minutes played, as in-swinging corner from Mollie Garner on the right-hand side was swung deep into the box, which found captain Naomi Sale-Hancock, free at the back post to head the ball into the corner of the goal. That lead didn’t last long as Sutton scored from a corner of their own 3 minutes later. Sutton did find the equaliser with 3 minutes left to play as a defensive mix up between the two center halves allowed Sutton’s striker time to set and finish to level the game. With the scores tied after 90 minutes the game went straight to penalties which Leek unfortunately lost 5-4 with Sutton’s keeper saving Leek’s first penalty.
