Colchester United conceded a bizarre own goal during their 3-2 victory against Grimsby Town on Tuesday night. The US were playing their first game since sacking boss Ben Garner on Saturday following four successive defeats that left them second bottom in League Two. They traveled to Grimsby, who were just three places and four points clear of them ahead of kickoff, desperate to kickstart their season. However, the clash at Blundell Park began disastrously when Grimsby was gift-wrapped an opener after just seven minutes as Colchester goalkeeper Owen Goodman struggled to deal with an unhelpful backpass from a team-mate. Us defender Will Greenidge had hacked a bouncing ball back towards Goodman in his net. However, it was a heavy pass and as Goodman tried to deal with it, he could only head it backward. Goodman desperately retreated to try and clear with his left foot, but the keeper missed the ball and it trickled in, he also ended up in the back of the net, before the own goal went down in his name to add to the embarrassment. However, his teammates didn't let the early adversity impact them as Joe Taylor equalized just three minutes later before Zach Mitchell put Colchester 2-1 up in the first half. Donovan Wilson then leveled the scoring with a neat finish before Goodman - who is on loan from Crystal Palace and an England Under 20 international - secured redemption with two stunning saves which proved to be telling as midfielder Arthur Read grabbed a 64th-minute winner for the US. It was a huge result for Colchester, who are now under the tutelage of interim boss Matthew Etherington, as they jumped out of the drop zone and moved above Forest Green Rovers and Tranmere Rovers into 21st. The US is now just one point behind 20th place Grimsby. █▒▒▒▒▒▒ DISCLAIMER ▒▒▒▒▒▒█ If you have a copyright issue feel free to message me by email ([email protected]) and we can get it resolved! ⚠️ I must state that in NO way, shape or form am I intending to infringe the copyright holder's rights.
