In 1997 the Cardinals were again walking out at Wembley, this time against Icis League Dagenham and Redbridge. Ultimately the game hinged around the sending off of Dagenham's Tony Rogers. Rogers had already got away with a shocking elbow to Steve Foster in the first half and after wrestling Robin Taylor to the ground in an arm lock right on the touchline after an innocuous challenge, the referee Jeff Winter had no choice but to quite rightly send him off right in front of the Woking crowd in the sixty-third minute. As Dagenham and Redbridge were pushed further back in extra time, it was only a matter of time before the Cards' broke down the Daggers' dogged defence and it was appropriate that Clive Walker proved the architect. In the tenth minute of extra time substitute Darran Hay slotted home his lucky thirteenth goal of the season - a crisp far post header from a Clive Walker corner. In many ways it was strangely a sad day at Wembley, rumours were rife of splits and departures and as it was soon to become apparent, this game was to be the closing chapter in a very successful book. One for which a generation of Cards fans who can't listen to Tina Turner's "Simply the Best" without the hairs on the back of their necks standing up will never forget.
