About :

Another great performance by Long Melford against higher classified opposition in Step 4 Kempston Rovers in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. For the decent crowd this was another exciting Cup match and overall the Villagers looked a more polished team and the ultimate victory was well deserved. Melford signalled their intent early on when teenager Archie Pether got down the Melford left flank and his measured cross found Jamie Griffiths in the Kempston box. But the Melford talisman unusually by his high standards failed to get a full connection with the ball, giving an easy save for the excellent visiting keeper Peter Denton. Play switched to the other end and in a Kempston attack skipper Robbie Goodman headed in to the arms of Finlay Shorten in the Melford goal. On 17 minutes Melford again came close with Griffiths heading goal wards and from this a connected powerful header goal bound from Pether, saw keeper Denton turn the ball over the bar. The half ended with Harry Stratton firing over the Melford bar from a great position. It was clear from the half time break Melford were hungry to win the game with increased tempo all over the pitch for the second period. On 58 minutes a Sam Mills header was twice cleared off the Kempston line, once by the ever impressive keeper Denton and Will Wingfield was caught in the face by a defender's boot with the referee ignoring the appeals for a penalty. Melford then had a run of free kicks with Griffiths nearly finding that elusive goal. On 86 minutes a golden chance against the run of play for Kempston who broke into the Melford half and from a cross the well built ex Aylesbury striker Tyriq Hunte headed wide. And so to penalties, a good start for Melford when young keeper Finlay Shorten saved the first effort from Ben Baker, Melford converted their first three and Ricardo Green fired high and wide for the Kempston fourth kick, Kieran Michaels netted the fourth to give Melford a 4-2 victory on penalties. Then the ground erupted!
