Long Melford came from behind twice, and with ten men, to record a 3-2 win in a thrilling FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie with Northampton ON Chenecks. The match was played at Stoneylands Stadium on Tuesday 1 September 2020, as competitive non-league football returned for the first night of games following the Covid-19 outbreak. Chenecks took the lead through a fine strike from LEWIS IRWIN, arrowing into the roof of the net. Melford responded on 40 minutes when NATHAN ROWE met Jamie Griffiths’ cross to direct his header into the net over the keeper’s reach. BEN LEWINGTON got through on goal to fire past Finlay Shorten in the Melford goal early in the second half as the visitors went back in front. On 51 minutes after a melee between the teams, Melford midfielder Dan Swain was harshly sent off for well-times tackle, but the home side did not throw in the towel. The ten men showed their character and on 65 minutes were rewarded when JACOB BROWN headed home to level the scores from another Griffiths’ cross. BROWN was quickest time anticipate as Chenecks’ keeper Josh Greatorex spilled a routine 30-yard Griffiths free kick to slot the ball home for the winner. The crowd erupted in response to this marvellous fight back as the Villagers set up another home tie with Kempston Rovers in the preliminary round LONG MELFORD: Finlay Shorten, Kieran Michaels, Will Wingfield, Dan Swain, Ross Waugh, Sam Mills, Nathan Rowe, Jacob Brown, Ben Tait, Jamie Griffiths, Callum Hemson (74) Subs used: Hassan Ally (74) Subs not used: Dan Smith, Josh Collins, Jake Jackson, Archie Pether, Elliot Walker
