India lead by 144 runs at the summon of Stumps Day 2. India started off the day with Rohit Sharma and Ravi Ashwin at either end of the strip. Australia initiated the operations with a mix of pace and spin. The batting duo negotiated the visitors watchfully for the first half of the first session. Rohit earned a six off a pull over deep square leg and Ashwin worked out a slog sweep for another maximum. It was Todd Murphy who removed Ashwin and breathed hope into the souls of Australians. But only if they knew that Rohit Sharma would go on to notch a century and the left-hander duo of Jadeja and Axar would hold a formidable resistance of 81* runs. Pujara Kohli and Surya had an off-colored day as they fell prey to the spinners. Pujara and Kohli had to blame themselves for getting dismissed on a nothing delivery outside the leg stump. The skipper and Jadeja glued a 61 runs partnership together and post-tea the former was cleaned up by a Jaffa from Cummins. India were 240-7 at one stage but it was the alliance of Jadeja and Axar that held their nerves and withstood the Aussie bowling attack. The visitors used Marnus Labuschagne and even Matt Renshaw at one phase but none could fragment the building partnership between the left-handed pair. One of the positives for Australia was the fifer for debutant Todd Murphy. He became the youngest Australian to get a fifer in Test debut. In the end India ends the day in a dominating position with two reliable batters on the crease. Todd Murphy: "I kind of expected to get at least one wicket going into the game. It's a special day when you end it with five debuts. It's been a very strange week because so much has transpired so quickly. I have simply tried to accept it and take pleasure in everything that comes with it from the moment I learned that I will be playing till today. I make an effort to maintain positive body language and self-confidence. I received advice to keep doing what I've been doing in state cricket from numerous guys. When I watched Jadeja Ashwin and Axar I noticed how consistently they carried out their actions. They didn't do a lot of searching. Putting enough balls in that region to ask questions for a sufficient amount of time was something I was considering. I learned two nights ago that it was a mad rush for them so it's fantastic to have them (family) here. To go to the airport they had to leave their house around 2 AM. They're quite appreciative that they had the chance to enter this place." Axar Patel: "I think I am batting really well for the past year and this gave me the confidence to score today. I work on my techniques and try to follow my coach. I think there is a bit of difficulty at the beginning of the inning but if you get used to it then it becomes easy to score runs you have to stay focused as anything can happen on any ball so I and Jadeja were trying to stay focused and rotate the strike sensibly.
