With last game between India and South Africa washed out due to incessant rain, this game holds no significance over the series but surely with over 10 days to go to T20 World Cup, India wouldn't want to lose any kind of rhythm they've picked up here and that Finals against South Africa on Thursday will be crucial too. The Indian women’s cricket team has already set up a date with South Africa in the final of this particular tri-series. A couple of days ago, they had a shot at a dress rehearsal against the hosts, only for rain to play spoilsport. So, this game against the West Indies, who have already been eliminated, might seem a dead rubber. But look closely, and there is still plenty to be gained for both sides, especially with the Women’s T20 World Cup on the horizon. India have so far looked a dominant outfit in the tri-series and barring the odd hiccup, have shown just why they are one of the favourites for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. Smriti Mandhana has sparkled at the top of the order, despite missing her regular opening partner Shafali Verma. Harmanpreet Kaur clicked into gear instantly the last time India played the West Indies, with youngsters such as Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma also doing their bit in the death overs. Bowling wise, too, India seem to have stumbled upon a formula. Renuka Singh Thakur gets the new ball to swing and seam. The spinners then apply the squeeze, and in Radha Yadav, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Deepti, they have three spinners capable of performing different roles, and excelling in those. The West Indies, on the other hand, have a few more problems to tide over. The sudden retirement of Deandra Dottin has rid them of firepower at the top of the order. The batting burden, unsurprisingly, has since fallen on Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor. Both are genuine match-winners but they would ideally want the others to chip in as well to ensure that their contributions are not always when chasing the game. Their bowling lacks penetration, and it remains to be seen how many changes they can bring about in such a short period. For now, though, they would hope that they can put their best foot forward against India today, and show that they can, on their day, trouble even the best batting units in the women’s game. That, in fact, is what the West Indies and India would want to gain from this match. Both know this encounter will have no bearing on the tri-series final. But both also understand that this fixture could play a major role in a few weeks’ time. India, because they have retained their core, seem to be better prepared for the T20 World Cup. So, they might have the luxury of shuffling their pack and testing how strong their bench strength is. The West Indies, on the other hand, would want to inject some confidence into their veins, and that might only be possible if they put up a good show against India. Not bad for what was dubbed a dead rubber, eh?
